The Buddy I Knew

Well hello there!

I haven't blogged for quite a while now...who missed me!?

I'm spending some quality time with my nanna today and I had a parcel waiting for me when I got there; a DVD I ordered.

Sherry Holley sent me a copy of her dad's DVD, 'The Buddy I Knew'.

This is probably the first time I've mentioned it on my blog, but I'm a huge Buddy Holly fan. For those of you who haven't heard of Buddy Holly, I strongly suggest you search him on YouTube.

My dad was a Buddy fan. I get most of my musical taste from my dad, and Buddy was no exception.

If you are a fan yourself or want to learn more about the him, there are a lot of websites and books available, but you can also purchase Larry's DVD 'The Buddy I Knew'. It is available from his website; http://larryholley.com

You certainly won't be disappointed.

Gift Exchange

Hi!
Sorry I haven't blogged in a while, I have one ready to write up later but I'm a little bit busy today.

I joined a gift exchange a while ago and as its so much fun, I thought i'd start one that all my followers can join in with. All you have to do is sign up to take part and add a few items to your wishlist, then you will be paired with someone to exchange gifts with. I love getting things in the mail, so if any of you are like me, you'll really love this!

There is a spending limit, so everyone spends around the same amount on their gift, but ultimately it's down to the individual to find something their recipient would like (you can do this by viewing their gift list, or sending them an anonymous message).

Obviously, the more people who participate, the better. So lets get the ball rolling; click HERE to sign up.
I hope there will be a significant interest in this :)

Happy Father's Day

I'd like to wish a Happy Fathers Day to my Dad.

I really wish I could be spending the day with him, but that's not possible.

My dad passed away unexpectedly on 19th May 2010, aged just 55 years old.

We may not have always had time for each other, but I loved him nonetheless. My dad taught me to read and how to ride a bike... He passed on his passion for music and his love of animals and fig rolls.

I could never thank him enough for introducing me to music. He taught me that it's okay to like stuff that isn't necessarily "popular" or even mainstream and it's okay to step outside of your normal genre. He was one of the few people I know who can go from listening to Buddy Holly to The Beatles, Vengaboys to Enya, Meatloaf to Lindisfarne or The Everley Brothers, even Jive Bunny! To you he might not have had the greatest taste in music but he was so passionate about it.

When my dad passed away, one of the things I kept was his "stack" (you'll have to google it) and his records. There is nothing more perfect than listening to your favourite album on vinyl...the first time I listened to Adele's '21' it was on my dad's record player.

I wish I'd have spent more time with my dad when he was alive.

There are times when I find myself watching a movie that I think he'd like (though falling asleep as soon as he seen the opening credits was usually the case), I can't watch 'The Boat That Rocked' without crying because everything about the movie reminds me of my dad.

There'll be times when I go out for dinner with my family and I think about how many plates of food my dad would eat, or what would be his favourite...then I get a sinking feeling in my stomach.

There will be times when I miss him so much, I won't know how i'll get through the day. Days like my wedding day when I have nobody to give me away and I don't get to have a father/daughter dance, or if I ever have children.

Then there are days like today when I just miss him...for no other reason than the fact that he was my dad and I love him and he's not here.

Happy Father's Day, Dad.
I love you x

This is the song I was named after, dad's choice, of course. My sister told me that when I was born he dedicated the song on the radio to me & my mum.

And a song that will always remind me of him;

1 down, 1 to go!

So far I have planned Chloe's party and it's going to cost almost double the budget I have been given!

I've cut down on everything I possibly can (I even found plain coloured paper plates instead of Toy Story ones!) but I'm very over budget...

Going to see if I can book the venue tomorrow, then I can start sorting out invitations, yay!

New Project!!!

My sister has just asked me to organise Bethany and Chloe's birthday parties this year!

Bethany will be turning 5 in November and would like a princess style ball - so much fun! She'll have lots of new friends to invite because she's starting school in September too.

Chloe will be turning 4, but she doesn't start nursery until September, so she doesn't have many friends to invite. She's going for a 'Toy Story/Buzz Lightyear' theme which is equally exciting (especially for me because I'm a huge Toy Story fan!).

I've been given a budget for each event and have to organise invitations, venue, cake, catering, entertainment and party bags. Can't wait to get started!!!

You are beautiful.

I logged into twitter this morning, which is my usual routine, but today I saw something different.

One of the girls I follow had retweeted things from a pro-anorexia account, advising how to starve herself so she could lose even more weight.

I'm no stranger to weight loss strategies, I've struggled with my weight my whole life and would love to be a UK size 8-10. Of course i've been jealous of my 'skinny' friends and have down days and fat days, but who says you can't be beautiful no matter what size you are?

I sent a tweet to every person I follow, telling them they are beautiful and I'm amazed by the reactions I received.

Some people replied with a simple "thank you". Some people were a bit confused and replied "err, ok?". Others replied "omg thanks! You really made my day", that was lovely to hear! But what really surprised me was that a lot of the replies were from people that sounded disbelieving, or people that replied "I'm not, but thanks. You are though" like I'd been fishing for a compliment in return.

It upsets me that some people have such low self esteem that they feel they can't accept a simple compliment, but it upsets me further that they obviously don't get compliments like this often enough.

I'm not going to get all "preachy", but spread the love a little bit today. Tell someone you love them, tell that girl she has pretty hair or you like her dress... Compliment someone, you'll feel great, but they'll feel even better.

Come Dine With Me

You might be familiar with the tv show 'Come Dine With Me', but if you're not, let me tell you a little bit about it.

The show has either four or five competitors who host a dinner party for the other contestants. Each competitor then rates the host's performance with the winner winning a cash prize.

Me, my sister, my brother in law and our friends had our own 'competition' a while back, just for fun. This time we're upping the steaks and we're all going to put money in so there will be a cash prize for the person with the highest rating.

Sounds fun, huh?

I'm not a bad cook, infact, I make dinner for my family every night, but I always feel the pressure when it comes to things like this because I'm really competitive! It's not just about the food, it's about the ambience, the table dressing and the entertainment.

My dessert has been planned already and I think I might be on to a winner there, but I'm really struggling to find a starter that not only 'fits' my menu, but will impress everyone.

I shall keep you updated with my progress!

Sorry I haven't blogged much lately!

I had a lot of family events going on over the last two weeks.

Last Thursday I travelled to Wolverhampton with my little family for my auntie's wedding. My nieces were bridesmaids and they looked beautiful, even if the youngest did scream through the entire service!

It was nice to be able to buy a pretty dress (in a smaller size!) for the wedding though. We left the evening do early on Friday night for the journey home.

Saturday was my nanna's 75th birthday. My sister and I had been planning a surprise party for her at the Holiday Inn and after months of planning and keeping it a secret we were over excited & very stressed! We had a sneaky suspicion that she knew about it, but after seeing her reaction when she walked in, I genuinely believe she didn't have a clue!

We invited her family from London, all of our family from up North and a few of the people she works with. It was a really nice night with entertainment from Peter Brown, a beautiful cake from Scrummy Mummy Cakes and Martin Kirby taking photographs for us.

We also paid for our nanna and her sister to stay at the Holiday Inn after the party. Their room was huge with a double bed EACH! I surprised her by putting the room key in her birthday card but it fell out when she opened it - she didn't even realise!

This is my nanna looking very happy/surprised/excited;

And her beautiful birthday cake;

I don't think I have any other photographs from that night that can be blogged without embarrassing my family or offending your eyes, so i'll leave it at that!

Monday was spent in the kitchen cooking up a storm for my cousin's birthday party. Typical British 'bank holiday' weather meant our plans for a BBQ/garden party were dampened (quite literally!). We settled for an indoor BBQ instead and I roped my mum into helping me. My favourite bit of the day was embarrassing my cousin by singing 'Happy Birthday' to her. I didn't enjoy when her cake was cut though. I made it myself and it took 8 hours!!!!!! After messing up my first attempt (which is rather unlike me!) I then had to remake 24 cupcakes and a 7" sponge, cover with icing and decorate. Of course, she couldn't have a standard cake, she wanted it to be Zebra print. Then I over complicated it further by suggesting the use of non-toxic black glitter...

Here's how it turned out;

Eurovision

Tonight is Eurovision!

I've been waiting for this for ages now and I'll be super happy if United Kingdom or Ireland win!

I wonder who will be playing the "Eurovision drinking game". Whenever you hear "Royaume Uni, nil point", down a shot of the nearest alcoholic drink you can find... Brilliant!

Who are you rooting for?

Quote of the day.

“I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” - Martin Luther King, Jr

Osama Bin Laden is dead?

Wow.

That's something pretty huge to wake up to...

I'm watching the footage on Sky News and to be honest, I'm rather unsure what to think?

Yes, it's great that they finally found him and I suppose justice has been served, if you want to look at it that way... The parents, children, lovers and friends of those who died in the 9/11 terrorist attack will now have closure and it's probably a huge weight lifted from their shoulders and their hearts, but where does this leave the world now?

Are we expected to believe that Osama's death will lead to peace? Has anyone thought about the consequences of his murder? How do we know that this won't spur more terrorist attacks from those who followed him?

I read a quote that sums this up quite well; "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind".

I can only hope that the troops serving in Afghanistan can be safe and go home to their families.

I'm really interested to hear your opinions on this, so please feel free to comment on this post or contact me via twitter.

Royal Wedding

As I'm sure you all know, tomorrow is the day of the Royal Wedding. My niece has been excited about it for ages now, so we decided we'd have a wedding party.

Shopping today was an absolute nightmare! None of the shops I went to had any Union Jack/Wedding plates or decorations, so we ended up with some floral design stuff and everywhere was manic so I didn't get everything on my shopping list.

I did, however, make these little beauties;

They are vanilla cupcakes with red buttercream frosting. I dusted them with some ruby red edible glitter too.

We're pretty excited for tomorrows events though.

Will you be tuning in?

My friend Jodi is doing something I will never have the balls to do; a sponsored sky dive. She's going to be raising money for the Katie Piper Foundation.

For those of you who aren't aware of Katie Piper, she is the strong survivor of an acid attack which left her blind in one eye and in need of numerous painful surgeries.

Taken from wikipedia; In late 2009, Katie Piper established a charity, The Katie Piper Foundation, aimed at raising awareness of the plight of victims of burns and other disfigurement injuries: the charity also campaigns for the specialist treatment Piper received - such as the after-care scheme undertaken in France - to be more widely available to patients in Britain.Simon Cowell is a patron of the foundation, along with her surgeon Dr. Mohammad Ali Jawad.

I would be eternally grateful if you could donate to this charity by sponsoring Jodi here.

Thank you,

Interview with Save Your Breath

Save Your Breath are Kris, Tom, Adam, Ben and Bobby, a 5-piece pop-punk band from Wales. Having toured with the likes of Kids In Glass Houses, The Rocket Summer and Fireworks, the band are finally releasing their debut album and I for one cannot wait to hear it! Tom was kind enough to answer a few questions for me to put up here.

How did the name 'Save Your Breath' come about?
Um, we were all jamming together for a while before we even considered that we would need a name. Then it came to the point where we gonna have to play a show and put our name on stuff so we all started just thinking of stuff that sounded cool. We came up with that and thought it was a good name so stuck with it. No massive story behind it i'm afraid!

Who or what inspires you to make music?
Everything really, where we grew up, the people we grew up with and the situations that we've gone through going up. As well as that obviously we all have massive influences musically. We all like a large variety of stuff. We've been influenced by bands like New Found Glory and Saves The Day, but then different members of the band listen to anything from The Cure to Pink Floyd.

If you could cover any song, what would it be and why?
Um, i'm not really sure. In the past we've covered Blink 182 - "Josie", The Movielife - Walking On Glass and New Found Glory - "Ballad For The Lost Romantics" as they were songs that really influenced us while we were growing up. I'd cover most songs by those bands if we had the chance to be honest!

Your debut album 'Vices' is set for release in June. If you had to choose one song that would turn any listener into a fan, which would it be?
Yeah we can't wait! It's been a long time coming and we're excited for everyone to hear it. As far as a song that I would pick......I think I would pick a track that we've named "Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy". I love it!

How has the band evolved since your EP 'Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy'?
Well we have a new singer in Kristian, and to be honest it's the first time we've felt completley comfortable as a band. We feel comfortable playing live together now and then songs we have written for this record we feel are the best we've ever done. It's a great feeling, we really feel like everything has finally come together.

What is next for Save Your Breath?
Well obviously the record comes out, and then we really we will just be touring as much as possible and playing these songs to as many people as we get the chance too. We want as many people as possible to hear this record as possible so we're making it our mission to try our hardest to get it into as many peoples hands as we can.

And finally, is there anything you'd like to say to SYB fans or anyone reading this interview?
Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks so much for supporting our band and being good friends to us. It means the world and it really does allow us to carry on what we are doing. Other than that, if you have a spare moment and some spare change, if you could pick up "Vices" from http://www.saveyourbreath.bigcartel.com/ you would be helping us more than we could possibly explain, we put so much into this record, all off our own backs, so any support we receive from you guys helps out so much.

Cheers!
Tom

So there you have it. It is so refreshing to come across a band that are down to earth and genuinely grateful for every fan they have. Anyone who has read my blog before will know that I'm a huge fan, but without being biased, I strongly recommend pre-ordering their album....you won't be disappointed! Look out for new tour dates coming soon.

Good Friday

I'm pretty OCD when it comes to my routine and planning my day, so when people change my plans at the last minute, it kind of annoys me. I need to realise that sometimes it can be a good thing, though.

I wasn't really looking forward to today because my 'plans' for this morning weren't exactly something I wanted to do, but they got changed at the last minute and my day ended up being pretty good!

After an unscheduled nap, I went out into the garden and finished weeding the rockery before putting up the fairy lights and butterfly solar powered lights, then I planted seeds and rearranged the ornaments. The ornaments look a bit crowded and the rest of the rockery looks a bit bare, but once the flowers start to grow I think it will look beautiful.

Me and my dad started the garden this time last year but we never got a chance to finish it because he passed away. I finished it on my own, mostly for my dad, but I also found it quite therapeutic...it gave me something to focus on and helped me get through my grief.
Easter Sunday was the last time I saw my dad, so I'm feeling a bit sad at the moment and I think having something to throw myself into is helping again.

After that, I made cornflake cakes with Bethany and Chloe. We put mini eggs and a fluffy chick in the middle of each one so they look like nests. We're growing some cress too. I love doing activities and art & craft stuff with them, I never did anything like that when I was a kid.

Now me and Chloe are snuggling up on the sofa to watch some Doctor Who! We have episodes 7-13 to watch in preparation for the new series kicking off tomorrow! Then we're all off to my nanna's for dinner, which brings me to the question; why do we eat fish on Good Friday?

Blink-182 reschedule European tour dates

(taken from blink182.com)

FROM MARK, TOM AND TRAVIS: It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce our planned 2011 European Summer tour has been rescheduled. When we booked the tour last year, we were confident that we would have the new album out before the summer. Turns out we were mistaken as the album is taking longer than we thought and won't be out till later this year. Check Me Out!

I finally finished making the cake I was asked to do and I'm really impressed with it!

Its for an 80th birthday, so this is what I came up with;

Its a lemon sponge with lemon buttercream and strawberry jam filling, absolutely delicious! I'm more impressed that the icing is completely smooth, its the best i've ever managed to get it.

Laura x

Cupcakes!

I made some chocolate cupcakes last night and they were amazing!
The frosting didn't turn out quite how I expected but it tasted lovely.
Now I just need to concentrate on the lemon sponge I'm making for an 80th birthday!

Happy Record Store Day!!

Did anyone get anything cool?
I need to get a new needle for my record player, but I'm pretty gutted I missed out today. I'm hoping I can go charity/thrift shopping next weekend to pick up some records. Saying that though, I still have Adele - '21', Ricky Valance - 'Tell Laura I Love Her' and Everly Brothers - 'All I Have To Do' waiting to be listened to.
If you did manage to get something awesome today, leave a comment or let me know via Twitter.

“I have come to realize that just making yourself happy is most important. Never be ashamed of what you feel. You have the right to feel any emotion that you want, and to do what makes you happy. That’s my life motto.” - Demi Lovato.

Start being that person.

“At a certain point, you gotta stop talking about wanting to be a different person and start being that person.” - Lucas Scott (One Tree Hill)

Sitting in the garden, surrounded by my family, enjoying some yummy food (if i do say so myself!). It's perfect BBQ weather today!

I've been reading my Recognise magazine (follow them here) which has a rather refreshing interview with Jessie J. I think she's a breath of fresh air to the music industry. An artist who refuses to be labeled, wether in relation to her music or her sexuality, constantly telling people they can be whoever they want to be. She's a pretty inspirational character.
There is also an interview with McFLY which made me laugh quite a bit! I saw them on their Above The Noise tour a few weeks ago and their performance was so strong, I can't wait to see what they do next.

I had the best day with you today.

This song is one of my favourites at the moment. It makes me think a lot about my relationship with my mum, but also my sister, who has pretty much looked after me since I was 13.

I wish my relationship with my mum was more like the one Taylor has with hers, but its not and I can't see it happening, no matter how much I try. This is why I will be eternally grateful for my sister. Not only is she the best sister I could ask for, but she's the best substitute mother and my best friend too.
